The Psychology of Design
All design, regardless of the discipline, is for human consumption. The ultimate goal of all good design is the accommodation and satisfaction of the people it serves. Great design must not only meet the functional requirements to improve the human condition, but aspires to satisfy needs at a higher level in the human psyche. It seeks to instill an appreciation of more intangible concepts such as beauty, identity, and spirituality into all who interact with it. To this extent, architecture and philosophy are inextricably intertwined. The architect must not only understand society's needs at a basic level, but also its dreams, it desires, and its aspirations: the characteristics that make us unlike any other creature on the planet, the very essence that makes us human. Leisure design philosophy takes this idea further, in that its primary concern is in creating spaces and experiences to explore and to fulfill these higher-level aspirations.
